14.1 Stepping out
In addition to storing and retrieving their own data, today’s applications need to access a variety of data maintained by others. Each system might have its own method, or protocol, for transmittal and storage. These include authentication services using the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and publishing systems using XML.
