Sun Sees 'Campus Grids' As Next Stage
January 9, 2002
By Paul Shread
The next stage of Grid computing will involve uniting single-project cluster Grids into "campus Grids" sharing computing resources, according to Peter Jeffcock, group marketing manager for Sun Microsystem's Client and Technical Market Products Group.
The first stage of Grid evolution, the cluster grid, involves compute or server farms powering a single project or goal, Jeffcock said.
"That's how people are starting today," he said, noting that 60% of users of Sun's free Grid Engine software have never done Grid computing before. [来源:http://www.doc163.com]
Sun offered the freeware because the company found that people weren't building Grids due to cost. "Our goal is to boost Grid adoption," said Jeffcock, who says that Sun Grid Engine users can start out simply and cheaply, "rather than spending a fortune on IBM Global Services."
Jeffcock said Sun gives away the software "because it's the right thing for our customers," but the ultimate goal, of course, is "to sell more systems. ... No one ever has enough compute power." Workstations on average utilize only 5%-20% of their capacity and centralized servers 30%-40%, Jeffcock said. Grids can increase utilization rates to 50%-90%, boosting ROI and productivity.
